Why can White Oak be fumed to create a darker color?
White Oak contains naturally occurring tannins that react with ammonia, causing the wood to darken without applying a conventional surface stain. This traditional process is known as ammonia fuming and became especially associated with White Oak furniture and woodwork during the Arts and Crafts period.
