All of our Box Beam Coffered Ceiling Systems are custom manufactured to order. As such, typical production lead times are 4 – 6 weeks for paint-grade systems (i.e. HDU or MDF) and 6 - 8 weeks for stain grade systems (i.e. Wood) from the date of order plus transit/delivery time.

Geometric and Bespoke designs may add to the lead times depending on their complexity and size.

CAN YOU INSTALL MY BOX BEAM COFFERED CEILING SYSTEM FOR ME?

Tilton Coffered Ceilings does not employ any installers or offer any installation services. We are a product manufacturer providing unique ceiling treatments and ceiling enhancement solutions to be installed by both Professionals and DIYers alike.

Most of our products are installed by professionals who purchase them for their clients or by the contractors/carpenters hired by the homeowners who purchase them. We also have many homeowner customers who have installed our products themselves with ease.

HOW LONG DOES INSTALLATION OF A BOX BEAM CEILING SYSTEM TAKE?

Typical Box Beam Ceiling System installations on an average size and height ceiling can be completed in 1 -2 days. We have found that using a calculation of about 40 minutes per coffer is fairly accurate in estimating the time it will take a crew of two installers and a helper to complete the process on a first-time basis (having never installed our system before). Once you've had experience with installing our system you will find that installation times will begin to decrease as you become more familiar and comfortable with the process.

There are several other factors that should be considered when trying to determine the time it will take to install our ceiling systems such as:

1. The location and/or height of the ceiling being installed
2. The number of installers performing the work
3. The complexity of the design being installed

CAN THE BOX BEAM CEILING SYSTEM BE INSTALLED IN A SUSPENDED TYPE APPLICATION?

The Tilton Box Beam Coffered Ceiling System has been designed as a permanent application in which the coffer modules are secured by way of lag screws directly to the ceiling structure (i.e. the joists or other wood framing that can support them). The system can also be installed directly over concrete ceilings using masonry anchors with lag screws.

Suspended type applications are possible and we have customers who have devised their own methods for suspending our system, but we do not currently offer any specific instructions and/or hardware for doing so.

CAN THE BOX BEAM CEILING SYSTEM BE INSTALLED ON A VAULTED, CATHEDRAL OR ANGLED TYPE CEILING?

Yes, the Box Beam Coffered Ceiling System can be installed on any vaulted, cathedral or angled type ceilings.

CAN I INSTALL A BOX BEAM COFFERED CEILING SYSTEM ON AN 8 FOOT TALL CEILING?

Yes, our Box Beam System can and has been successfully installed on 8 foot tall ceilings by many of our customers. While we recommend our shallowest 4 1/4"D Overlay Style or 3 1/2"D Inset Style beam sizes for these applications we have also completed projects on 8 foot tall ceilings with our 6 1/4"D Overlay Style and 5 1/2"D Inset Style beams sizes with compete satisfaction reported by those clients.

You may also want to consider our Shallow Beam Coffered Ceiling Treatment for low ceiling applications.

DO I NEED TO INSTALL DRYWALL ON THE CEILING PRIOR TO INSTALLING A BOX BEAM CEILING SYSTEM?

Yes, drywall should be installed on the ceiling surface prior to installing our Box Beam Coffered Ceiling System for the following reasons:

1. If you opt for our No Ceiling Panel option the underlying ceiling surface will be visible within the center of each coffer.

2. Even though our various integrated Ceiling Panel Style options provide complete coverage of the underlying ceiling surface your local fire code will more than likely require a layer of drywall on the ceiling as a fire barrier between floors along with a scratch coat of joint compound.

3. It will provide a clean continuous surface on which to mark center of the ceiling and to snap guide lines to aid in the installation process.

WHAT IF MY ROOM OR CEILING IS NOT PERFECTLY SQUARE?

It’s common knowledge that no room is ever perfectly square, nor is any wall perfectly flat or straight and we realize this.

To accommodate these inevitable circumstances the Perimeter Beam Boards of every Box Beam Coffered Ceiling System can be scribed and/or tapered to fit the surrounding walls to accommodate differences between the perfectly square system and the imperfect room or walls. Due to our proprietary design, every system we build has more than adequate space between the outermost coffer modules and the surrounding walls to allow for compensation and adjustment in this regard.

Furthermore, when utilizing the Perimeter Molding option for your project, any differences between the scribe or taper on the Perimeter Beam Board and the surrounding walls will be covered so they need not be perfectly tight to the walls.

Alternatively, if you have opted not to include a Perimeter Molding for your project, you will simply need to take extra time and care to ensure that your scribes and/or tapers are tight enough to the surrounding walls so that they are visually acceptable.

WHAT IF MY ROOM OR CEILING IS AN ODD SHAPE?

Since every Tilton Box Beam Coffered Ceiling System is custom manufactured to order we can design and build the coffers to accommodate any ceiling shape. Since our Design & Quote software application is not capable of configuring or products for odd shaped ceilings, these will need to be quoted on a customized basis. Please contact us for these types of projects and we'll guide you through the process.

ARE THE BOX BEAM SYSTEM COFFERS AVAILABLE IN SHAPES OTHER THAN SQUARE & RECTANGULAR?

Yes. We can manufacture the coffer modules in virtually any shape including circles and shapes with radiuses/curves. You can find examples of designs of various shapes and sizes in our Image Galleries.

CAN YOU CREATE A CUSTOM DESIGN FOR MY BOX BEAM CEILING SYSTEM?

Absolutely. In fact, every Box Beam Coffered Ceiling System we manufacture is custom designed to fit each ceiling. Please contact us to discuss your design ideas or if you are interested in having us create a custom design for you.

DO YOU HAVE AN OPTION FOR NO CEILING PANEL WITH THE BOX BEAM CEILING SYSTEM?

Yes, we offer a 'No Panel' option which can be seen on our Ceiling Panel Options page.  While our integrated Ceiling Panel options offer some distinct advantages we realize that there are many applications in which the absence of a Ceiling Panel will be beneficial. For example, to allow for existing light fixtures and/or HVAC vents to remain in place and undisturbed.

CAN I ORDER NON-STANDARD BEAM BEAM SIZES WITH THE BOX BEAM CEILING SYSTEM?

In short, yes, we can customize the beam sizes in both depth and width for our Box Beam Coffered Ceiling Systems, but our standard offerings have been sized according to industry standard S4S board widths which are readily available in lengths of up to 16’ (i.e. 1x4, 1x6, 1x8, 1x10 and 1x12). All of our standard Depth and Width sizes can be mixed and matched for a total of 90 different possible combinations to suit your needs and desires

HOW ARE RECESSED LIGHT FIXTURES INSTALLED WITH THE BOX BEAM CEILING SYSTEM?

The best way to plan for and install recessed lighting fixtures (i.e. hi-hats, pot lights, can lights etc.) with the Tilton Box Beam Coffered Ceiling System is to run the rough wiring for these fixtures prior to installing the system and without mounting the fixtures themselves and leaving enough slack to allow for the fixtures to be centered perfectly in each coffer.

The ¾” thick integrated Ceiling Panel in each Coffer Module is then drilled with a hole saw for the size fixture being used and "renovation" or "old work" type fixtures are then wired and secured into the Ceiling Panels in the same way that they would be secured into the drywall of a typical ceiling.

HOW ARE HANGING LIGHT FIXTURES ADDRESSED WITH THE BOX BEAM CEILING SYSTEM?

All hanging light fixtures (i.e. chandeliers, ceiling surface mounted lighting) use a hollow threaded rod and/or machine screws for installation of the fixture to the electrical box so you would install the electrical box as you normally would. Then, depending on how much deflection there is in the ceiling and how much you need to adjust the Box Beam System Coffer Modules to overcome that deflection, will result in the use of a longer threaded rod and/or machine screws to accommodate the difference.

CAN ACCENT LIGHTING BE USED WITH THE BOX BEAM CEILING SYSTEM?

Yes, accent lighting (i.e. rope lighting, back lighting) can be used with our Box Beam Coffered Ceiling System utilizing one of the following 2 options we currently offer:

  1. Floating Crown Molding – We can set the Crown Molding to have a space between the top edge of it and the ceiling panel to allow for LED rope/strip lighting to be inserted and to illuminate out from behind it.

  2. Light Rail Molding – We can install a light rail molding below the crown molding that has a dado on the top edge to allow for LED strip lighting to be inserted in it and to illuminate the face of the crown molding.

The accent lighting fixture of choice (i.e. rope light, strip light, LED, incandescent etc.) will need to be installed in the field. This is easily done prior to installing the Beam Bottom Boards of the system. For example; All of the wiring and any necessary transformers for the accent lighting can be routed and installed in the hollow cavities of the Beams before capping them off with the included Beam Bottom Boards.
